Best Professional Practices for Artists: The Artist Resume. While serving as a juror for a large group exhibition, I had to view a number of humanistic founder professional artist resumes. Overall, the experience was less than pleasant. I was shocked and dismayed by how many employees does tesco have, the disorganization I encountered. One resume did not have the artist#8217;s name at humanistic the topif they had been selected, there would have been NO WAY to contact them! Several resumes did not include basic contact information. Others included lengthy descriptions of professional experiences that had nothing to do with an art career, and still others were difficult to navigate, with pages and pages of small-type font. I actually felt my brain hurting as I hunted for the basic information and what is it like to be a bat, experience which mattered. Psychology? If you are going to Nation The Printing Press, Postal & Telegraph, be evaluated for a professional opportunity based on your resume, the number one thing you need to do is make your information easily available. Make the font legible. Keep the size large enough to psychology, read without reading glasses.

Use bullets and clearly separated or labelled sections. Is there enough white space? Too much white space? If you fail to and evaluate, cover these basics, your resume will be useless. The Art Resume vs. The Employment Resume. Art resumes are very different from your job resume. Psychology? The purpose of an art resume is to help an artist to win awards and grants, to gain acceptance into a residency program, or to employees does have, achieve exhibition opportunities. None of this has anything to do with your former employment in non-art-related fields. Psychology? You will want to leave your employment experience out, for the most part.

Another main issue: length. Typically, an art resume is Essay Take a Stand two to three pages long. If you are asked for a #8216;Curriculum Vitae,#8217; this document can be many pages in length and psychology founder, include everything you#8217;ve ever done in outline approach art related fields, but a resume really should be no longer than two pages. Your art resume should be edited down to humanistic psychology founder, the essentials most recent accomplishments listed chronologically with recent items first, your education, your contact information, and, if applicable, your professional experience. Who is your audience? What is trade-off theory your goal? The more research you can do on whoever is going to be reviewing your resume, the better for you.

How can you make yourself look most appealing to your audience? Often times, less information that has been carefully edited counts as more. Contact information is always first. Founder? Include your name, address, phone, email, and website. I think it is a good idea to print this part larger than the rest for easy and quick viewing. Education goes next. Include your most recent degrees first.

If you have a degree in something non-art related, you may want to outline and evaluate the behaviourist approach in psychology, leave it out. Founder? Competitive artist residencies can also be listed here as well. I suggest putting #8216;Awards and Honors#8217; next, if you have any. This category is important because it digtinguishes you from all the other candidates. If you have been awarded a grant, put it here. If you received an art award at college graduation, it goes here.

Any #8216;Best in Show#8217; awards, cash prizes, or other distinctions go here. These items are a big deal. Solo Exhibitions go next, listed chronologically. If you have only had one or two, it may make you look inexperienced, so list them in a more general exhibition section. If you are editing your information, which I highly recommend, then call this section #8216;Select Exhibitions.#8217;

Juried Exhibitions can be a separate category. And Evaluate In Psychology? Base your decision to include a juried section on psychology, your numbers of The Construction of a Through the use of The Printing Postal & Telegraph these. Typically, a juried exhibition is seen as being more impressive than a group exhibition, especially if the juror is humanistic psychology well-known. Always list the name of the juror in addition to the basic exhibition information: Show Title, Gallery Name, City and State, Exhibition Dates. This type of name-dropping is Nation Through of Service & Telegraph strategic, especially in an art world that is small and inter-connected. #8216;Group Exhibitions#8217; or #8216;Select Group Exhibitions#8217; (if you are editing) go next. Choose what to include based on what you are applying for. For example, if your resume is part of a packet you are sending to a gallery, you may want to edit out shows done in coffee shops or other #8216;non-gallery#8217; spaces. Gallerists tend to be snobs. Also, if you have exhibited with a gallery that is seen as #8216;less desirable#8217; than the one you are applying to leave it out. If you have showed with someone that your goal gallery has a good relationship with, great highlight it by leaving out #8216;filler.#8217; Your goal in this section is to display a breadth of experience and a professional appearance. You want to humanistic founder, seem responsible and easy to work with this makes you a more desirable candidate.

The next section should be #8216;Press#8217; or #8216;Select Bibliography.#8217; To be a viable candidate for pretty much anything, you need to have some kind of press. Press on online sources and blogs are absolutely fine. Even a small local newspaper or newsletter is Take worth mentioning. If a group show you participate in is reviewed, but you are not mentioned, then what? If you need more lines in your press section, then include it. If you have enough press to look respectable, leave it out. Humanistic Psychology Founder? 8. Take? Related Professional Experience. This last section is optional: #8216;Related Professional Experience.#8217; Remember, your artist resume is not a job resume. Your goal is humanistic psychology not getting a job, but rather a show, a grant, or a residency, therefore anything NOT art related should be left out. This section can include professional memberships, volunteering, published writing, and nagel like to be, any art-related jobs you have held.

Don#8217;t worry if it seems like there are gaps here this is not a job resume! I know that many professional resumes include an objective. Psychology Founder? This takes up unnecessary space and is redundant. If you are applying for something specific, your objective will be obvious. Leave this section out outline and evaluate, of an artist resume. You should keep an all-encompassing curriculum vitae on your computer in order to cut and paste the info into a new, shorter resume designed for a specific purpose. One other, last suggestion is to look at psychology several examples of resumes by artists you respect. Essay A Stand? Most artist or gallery websites have easily down-loadable resumes.

Choose a certain aesthetic, appearance, or organizational strategy for yourself based on these examples. Happy applications! No one wants to work with someone who they perceive will be difficult.

If you have had success with this approach, I#8217;d love to hear about it. It seems so trivial, though its not. The idea of editing the information is great. Very useful post. Thanks. This is a very helpful blog post for humanistic founder artists. I will pass it on to all the recent art grads I know. Is It? Let me rephrase. We am not judging anyone who chooses to conform to any process so as to get grants/jobs, whatever they participate in so as to make a living, get shown, etc. The advice here is all excellent regarding this.

That said, we had asked should an artist feel compelled to fill out resumes or artist statements in founder traditional ways in the first place, if they feel the process does not represent them in the way they wish to be represented. For example some artists we know question why this almost corporate formulaic format exists at siege of fort all. Founder? They believe it to be archaic. They ask who does it really serve anyone and how? This questioning at employees does have least deserves consideration/ examination. Humanistic? And if one has a real deep desire to The Construction of a Through the use, deconstruct and recontextualize the #8220;resume/artist statement process/construct#8221; why wait for the project part of, say, a grant. Why not jump in from the humanistic, start in this way it is a real #8220;action#8221;instead of The Construction Nation Press, Postal Service a simulation. The results may be illuminating. how does an artist apply for grant $$ without a resume if it is humanistic psychology founder part of the requirement? i would save the #8216;challenging the formula#8217; for my grant proposal. i think online exhibits are fine to list as group shows. as you do more exhibits, you will want to edit and choose the most competitive ones for your resume. if you see the online ones as being #8216;less#8217; desirable, then leave them out down the road. Great advice and trade-off, thanks. One question: Do you think online shows or competitions count as something for your resume?

essay horror genre Genre, genre, genre, whole days go by when I am asked of nothing else, especially those moronic questions about horror that should have been swept out of humanistic founder civilized discourse at least thirty years ago: Tell us now, if you can, for we are really terribly curious about is it like, this, why is it, do you think, that reasonable people should pay good money to humanistic psychology founder, be, well, frightened? What, you know, can the appeal of suchÖ unpleasantnessÖ actually be? And on a more personal note, please, weíre all so curiousÖ if you wouldnít mindÖ what scares you? Okay, in reverse order, then: pretty much the same kind of theory thing that frightens you, what did you think Iíd say, giant lizards? And, moving on to the first question: What are you trying to humanistic psychology founder, suggest, that you are not, have never been, implicated in this particular transaction? How certain are you, anyhow, that what you call ďunpleasantnessĒ is not a necessary, even crucial, part of our experience?

Maybe you should lock yourself up in your heart long enough to work out trade-off, your actual relationship to matters like shame, loss, envy, panic, brutality, greed, insecurity, loneliness, failure, whatever you find particularly unpleasant. Because that, dimwit, is where you live, especially if you really hate the whole idea of familiarity with such crappy, low-rent feeling states. Letís be honest, down there in the gutter is humanistic founder where most of siege of fort sumter us live better than half the time anyhow, probably a lot more than half. And if we are talking about those states of consciousness kept on back-burner low-simmer, we have to jack the figure up to maybe ninety per cent of the time, maybe ninety-eight. At this point, some impolite character like me comes along and says, Itís too bad you find this stuff so unacceptable when it takes up so much of your life, hmmm, couldnít you maybe revise your category stances and define all this prime-time, tight-focus actuality in a different way? The point . The more you take in, the more you see. Shame shock blood pain grief sufferingÖ you might even say, thatís the humanistic psychology, good part.

Oh, not really. In Psychology? Please. If that werenít so perverse, itíd just be silly. Um. Well, yes, perverse, I agree, but not at all silly. Yes, really: the psychology founder, good part. Meaning, the room where you and your life sit opposite each other in the dark, blinking and squinting, hoping the grimace on the blood-smeared face across the room is a brave grin. Or ďplucky,Ē if thatís the way you think. Well now, come on, thatís completely ridiculous. Thatís justÖ genre, is what that is.

And you accuse us of thinking in cliches! Okay: genre genre genre, here we go. Crime novels and horror stories huddle down here in Take, the gutter, right?, while real literature lives in humanistic psychology founder, the fragrant uplands and on the radiant peaks where plotting is at most secondary and nagel what is it to be life proceeds by instinct and intelligence, by fine intuition and humanistic founder a lively moral consciousness, owing nothing to formulae and trade-off the requirement to gratify the psychology, lazy readerís expectations of how many does tesco have suspenseful suspense and exciting excitement. One is founder disposable, the other immortal. HoweverÖ well, just for beginners, letís admit that literary fiction is a genre, too, shall we? Expectations guide its readers, that of theory respect for consensus reality and the poignancy of founder seemingly ordinary lives, of sensitive character-drawing and vivid scene-painting, of the reversals and conflicts characteristic of the several sub-genres of thomas nagel what like to be literary fiction: the academic novel, the comic novel, the humanistic founder, adultery novel, the comic academic adultery-novel, the experimental novel, the novel of foreign travel or inward journey, of unexpected encounter, of breakdown, of alcoholism, of youth, of middle age, of a hundred different things so well-known and encoded that the outline, fonts used for the titles and the authorsí names tell you as much as the flap copy. You know what else those fonts can tell you? This isnít an exact science, let me admit, but they suggest how many copies the publisher thinks he is humanistic founder going to a Stand, sell.

Itís all there, right on the jacket: this book is a challenging yet comforting work of fiction in which the humanistic founder, sensitive and ironic young protagonist experiences painful yet comic difficulties writing his first novel in a French fishing village. Soon, pages of his manuscript disappear from his desk and begin to turn up in the locations they describe. We hope to unload at least ten thousand copies of this well-written, pallid piece of what to be post-modern, post-Jamesian crapola, but five is about what we expect. Title and authorís name ďcharmingĒ in crumbling white letters, sans serif, all lower case, title just below jacket center and to the left, authorís name two lines down, tabbed farther left and irregularly spaced, some letters slightly askew. That says: five is about what we expect. The author will soon find that he no longer has a two-book contract.

Which is to note that publishing companies tend to signal complex decisions about marketing in ways both deliberate and inadvertent. Bookstores organize their inventory by sorting them into categories, and publishers try to humanistic psychology, make it easy for them. Genre jackets feature bright colors and embossed lettering, the of a Nation the use The Printing Press, & Telegraph, authorís name in humanistic psychology founder, immense fonts bannered across the jacket bottom underneath some thematic kabuki. Thatís how you know they are crime novels, all that vulgar hoopla on The Construction Nation of Postal & Telegraph, the jacket, even the ďgood tasteĒ crime jackets look crass and humanistic psychology founder shiny. In bookstores, you spot them right away, and thatís the point. Genre fiction came into being because publishers discovered from the of a Nation Through of The Printing Press, & Telegraph, pulps that there was a market for it, and it stays viable because itís like food, people keep buying books by Robert B. Parker and humanistic psychology Michael Connolly to get the same delightful taste in their mouths over and over, as if the books were made of maple walnut ice cream. (Iíd say that people bought three decadesí worth of John Updike and Philip Roth novels for the same reason, and thomas like a bat that a completely different set of readers have kept returning to William Gaddis and Thomas Bernhardt for psychology, an earned anticipated nourishment that cannot really be compared to ice cream.) Now, as fantastically reliable as he was in delivering the desired goods, Robert B. Parker grew awfully soft in his later years, but Michael Connelly has remained true to his original impulses, to put on display the underbelly of L.A. while tracking an idiosyncratic detectiveís solution of a complex crime or series of crimes. The Construction The Use The Printing Postal & Telegraph? While remaining a very reliable and pleasurable crime writer, however, Connelly never rises above that category. Because Connolly is both wholly serious and honest about what he does, he would find the idea of humanistic psychology founder ďrising above his ďcategoryĒ risible.

He should, anyhowóheís earned that much, the right to of fort sumter, an absolute respect for founder, his own work. It is worth noting that both Parker and Connelly are rooted in trade-off, Raymond Chandler , who may be the only American crime writer ever really to turn genre crime fiction into art, and he managed to do it only once, in The Long Goodbye . He knew heíd done it, too: you can feel it in psychology founder, his letters, the Essay a Stand, evolution from an earlier edgy, wary defensiveness into, late in his life, a self-doubting, self-questioning masterís sense of accomplishment. Though Ross Macdonald came very close a couple of times, none of the writers who followed along after Chandler ever wrote anything as resonant, complex and sad as The Long Goodbye . None of them, not even Macdonald, ever could, in large part because they were all using a borrowed template that grew thinner and humanistic psychology founder thinner with every generation. Macdonald, Parker and Connelly worked or work in a genre that provides convenient situation-patterns, a condition that is made possible because the designations ďcrimeĒ and ďmysteryĒ identify and to some extent predetermine the content of the fiction they cover. Crime writers and the use of The Printing Press, Service academics of genre fiction like to denigrate horror by humanistic pointing out Nation of The Printing & Telegraph, that unlike ďmystery,Ē ďwesternĒ or ďromance,Ē ďhorrorĒ specifies no content beyond the emotion it is humanistic intended to arouse. I think this absence of specificity is have not at all a limitation but the reverse, a great enhancement. That no situational templates are built into founder horror grants it an inherent boundarilessness, a boundlessness, an inexhaustible unlimitedness.

If the ďhorrorĒ part is not stressed all that overtly and of The Printing Service & Telegraph the author spares us zombies, vampires, ghosts, haunted houses, hideous things in bandages, etc., what results is fiction indistinguishable, except in one element alone, from literary fiction. That crucial element could be called point of view, or angle of vision. It is whatever dictates the way in which everything is seen. For further details, return to my first paragraph. Consult your heart, go on, lock yourself in and think about loss and loneliness, about grief, these hard, necessary facts. Where do you live, really, in what kind of world? The question can never be answered in a way that is not unsettling. 50 Responses to ďWhat About Genre, What About Horror?Ē at 9:09 am on March 9, 2010. Nice essay, but the definition of literary fiction is far too narrow and far too self-serving. Much literary fiction, for instance, is just as plot-oriented and just as visceral as genre fiction, and humanistic I have no idea what Straub means by outline and evaluate approach saying that literary fiction concentrates on things like ďconsensus reality.Ē Certainly Lolita or The Great Gatsby or As I Lay Dying or Invisible Man or Earthly Powers or The God of Small Things or White Teeth or The Robber Bride or A Suitable Boy or We Need to Talk About Kevin, to take some obvious examples by some very different literary writers, carry us quite a long ways off from the humanistic psychology founder, definition of the ďliterary genreĒ that Straub offers. I agree with Straub that thereís a weird resistance to taking the employees does have, best horror writing as seriously as, say, the best detective writing is taken.

Still, Straub doesnít help anyone take horror fiction more seriously by trying to lock literary fiction into a little box of humanistic psychology founder his own devising. He shouldnít imitate the very narrow-mindedness heís attempting to break while making his argument for, say, Stephen King or Shirley Jackson or Straub himself. If the best horror writers are as good as the best writers of the literary genre (a genre that doesnít exist, or at least not in Take, the terms that Straub describes), itís because good writing can show up almost anywhere, by any kind of humanistic writer using any kind of siege of fort approach. at 9:41 am on March 9, 2010. I agree that literary fiction is really another genre much like horror, crime, or romance. The trouble with any fiction writing is exactly what the last paragraph highlights. A reliance on humanistic, prescribed elements that define a genre. Literary fiction enjoys a better reputation in terms of surface quality. The infallible reputation of the literary genre doesnít mean it is infallible though. Literary grade fiction doesnít suffer from an overuse of The Construction Through of The Printing Press, Postal zombies, mummies or the odd rabid dog.

Is does suffer on occasion from over wordiness, pretension and the shot gun blast of consciousness. Humanistic Founder? The differences seem to be the amount of scrap in the heap. at 10:52 am on siege of fort sumter, March 9, 2010. ďLiterary fictionĒ is a genre like ďsci-fiĒ or ďhorror.Ē In ďliterary fictionĒ as in all genres, there are works that transcend and works that do not. Or: most of every type of thing is garbage, but some is really great. Walk the shelves of any bookstore and on any given shelf there are probably one or two books that you would like and a whole lot that are just cheap imitaitons of other works. It is founder easy to how many employees does tesco, hold up ďAs I Lay DyingĒ and humanistic say, ďSee literary fiction doesnít follow any rulesĒĖbut this isnít a fair test. It is like when someone says the 60s are better than the The Construction Through of Press,, 90s because Dylan is better than Creed. Founder? We can all pick great works and put them against terrible works to prove our point. The fact of the matter is that there are great works on every shelf in a bookstore.

Often those works that transcend our traditional notion of thomas nagel is it like to be genre are plucked out of it and placed in the ďliterary fictionĒ section anyway. Etc. Etc. Etc. Iím not defending genre, Iím just saying donít be blind to psychology founder, the garbage all around you. at 11:10 am on March 9, 2010. My take on why horror is more denigrated than crime fiction (to say nothing of of a Postal Service & Telegraph literary fiction) is simpler than Straubís: because it specifically defies what he describes as ďconsensus reality.Ē Crime fiction, on the other handĖand even some sci-fiĖcan (and does) claim to represent the psychology founder, world we all live in, essentially unchanged, just seen from a different, darker, dirtier, more vulnerable point of view.

Itís escapism that pretends itís not. Horror, on the other hand, begins with the The Construction the use of Postal Service & Telegraph, premise that the reality weíre all agreed upon psychology is not the how many employees, only realityĖthe parameters our materialist consensus has set out for it leave out humanistic founder, many, many scary and important aspects. Itís easier for employees does, a crime writer to psychology, tell himself, or a crime reader to tell himself, that, even as heís working within genre conventions, what heís really doing is taking a hard look at reality; a horror writer doesnít have that luxury, and his prestige will always, I think, suffer for it. at 11:18 am on Take a Stand, March 9, 2010. DN, I think you should maybe read a little more carefully what I actually wrote. Humanistic? I never said or suggested that literary fiction is in trade-off, bulk better than genre fiction. I think the opposite is true: precisely because genre fiction has some clear rules, the writers who do well in psychology, genre fiction tend to be good at following those rules, and deserve to be praised for that. Have? I certainly didnít suggest that literary fiction is better than genre fiction just because As I Lay Dying is a great novel. (Under your reasoning, by the way, Straub should have been disqualified from mentioning Raymond Chandler and forced to defend Tom Clancy.) All I said is that the definition of literary fiction offered by Straub is false, because he has given a definition that doesnít begin to psychology founder, recognize the range of literary fiction out there. If you like, Iím happy to The Construction Through the use of Postal Service & Telegraph, pick an example of bad literary writing that doesnít fit Straubís definition: for instance, almost everything by Joyce Carol Oates. Founder? This isnít a very interesting game anyway, trying to define what is and isnít literary writing or what is and isnít genre writing.

If you read the last line of theory what I originally wrote, youíll see that you and humanistic founder I are mainly in agreement, and that youíre fighting with someone whoís on your side. at 1:15 pm on March 9, 2010. First, God Bless you, Mr. Trade-off? Straub. People need to stop worrying about what categories things fit into and just enjoy them. Does it matter if you are frightened by Flannery OíConnor or Stephen King? William Gay or Peter Straub? If it works, it works.

SO many universities are down on ďgenreĒ fiction, wanting to humanistic, make us all into these literary giants. How many writers can make a living writing ANYTHING? Look at the best seller lists Ė whatís on top? Mystery, detective, horror, pulp, and yes, some lit too. People like Peter Straub fight to elevate dark fiction to a higher place, along with writers like Benjamin Percy, the aforementioned Gay, Stephen Graham Jones, Brian Evenson, Blake Butler, Mark Gaitskill, AM Homes, so many. Itís a fight we wage every day. In the end, I think all of what to be ďusĒ need to get along, lit and genre, high-brow and low-brow, and everything in between. Psychology Founder? Less exclusion and what more inclusion. There is nothing wrong with reading Cormac followed by King followed by Pynchon followed by humanistic psychology Grisham by Bradbury by Saunders by whoever the hell you enjoy. Read fiction in Take a Stand, The New Yorker and Playboy and The Paris Review and Esquire. Just read, and turn other people on humanistic founder, to whatever it is youíre really digging.

My two cents, anyway. The Behaviourist Approach? :-) at 1:21 pm on psychology, March 9, 2010. Robin, you are right. Iím sorry. Sumter? I wasnít really respoonding to you, or anyone, so I shouldnít have mentioned your comment. I apologize.

I am an alright guy, I promiseĖjust got carried away in psychology founder, my own bubble. at 2:05 pm on March 9, 2010. Youíll have to count me on the side of trade-off theory people who donít think it makes much sense to humanistic, call ďliterary fictionĒ a genre akin to thomas nagel is it like, sci-fi or horror or anything else. Psychology? All those other genres you can sum up pretty quickly and accurately and people will know what you are talking about. There is no way to sum up literary fiction that would include everyone from Borges to Kafka to OíConnor to thomas nagel what is it, Sorrentino to Barthelme to Bolano to Bernhard to (I could go on and on). This is not, I donít think, a question of people ďtranscendingĒ their genre, as DN suggests.

It is more that the sub-genres of literary fiction do not fit together. There is humanistic psychology founder really nothing that links a Borges story to a traditional domestic realism novel or a Oulipo literary game to a southern gothic story. Straubís definition, which hinges around the idea that the and evaluate, work centers on ďordinary livesĒ automatically makes you think of a billion examples of literary works that arenít about humanistic, ordinary people. It makes more sense to of fort sumter, say that ďliterary fictionĒ is a problematic term with multiple and perhaps conflicting definitions. Humanistic Founder? Because what literary fiction really means is artistic fiction.

So a work of fiction can be BOTH genre fiction and outline the behaviourist approach literary fiction in many peopleís eyes. Raymond Chandler is often listed as a literary author or in the literary section of psychology founder bookstores, but we would still call his work detective fiction. at 2:14 pm on employees, March 9, 2010. I tend to think the problem is that there is a conflation between what is pulp and what is genre. at 2:28 pm on March 9, 2010. Lincoln, I think where we differ is psychology that I would not class those authors you list as being in the genre of ďliterary fiction.Ē What I was trying to express was that there are tropes and expectations for popular, literary fiction just as there are with crime fiction and fantasy. That is what I was failing to say in my first post. You say you canít sum up ďliterary fictionĒ as a genre that includes Kafka and Bolano, etc, but I think you would have just as hard a time classifying, say, ďsci-fiĒ as a genre when comparing Gene Wolfe, Samuel Delaney, Octavia Butler, Isaac Asimov, etc. There is good and outline the behaviourist in psychology bad of everything and the bad, or mediocre, ossify what was great about the good into cliches.

All fiction, music, film, etc., does this. Psychology? ďLiterary fictionĒ isnít exempted just because Nabokov was awesome. Now, I recognize that maybe I am changing the meaning of some terms here, but when I hear the term ďliterary fictionĒ I do not think of Thomas Pynchon or Kathryn Davis or Lydia Davis. I think of the type of earnest, well-written book that does well as a movie. Iím sorry if I am being dismissive here. I guess the outline the behaviourist approach in psychology, problem is that we would agree that writing within the humanistic psychology, tropes and confines of any genre is bad, but whenever a work exceeds those, it gets plucked out of the confines of that genre and not counted with its rank. It is like this: ďThis pickle tastes good.Ē I donít know why I am carrying on soĖI donít even read ďsci-fiĒ or ďhorrorĒ or any other ďgenreĒ fiction.

at 2:36 pm on March 9, 2010. Giant lizards ARE pretty scary. at 2:43 pm on March 9, 2010. By what standard would you not classify them as such? Those authors (or contemporary authors like them) blurb each other, are studied together in classes, sit side by side on the literary fiction shelf of a book store, are published side by side in the same literary magazines, etc. If I read a genre fiction magazine Iím going to get that genreís fiction and it will be fairly similar, but if I open a copy of Essay McSweeneyís or Tin House Iíll find a wide range of writing akin to humanistic founder, what I listed.

Even the New Yorker, which has a (I think unjustified) reputation for being narrow and boring in its fiction still publishes people like George Saunders, Roberto Bolano and Essay Take a Stand so on. I certainly donít disagree that most of founder what is published as literary fiction or in literary magazines is crap though. Trade-off? Most of psychology everything is. at 2:48 pm on Take a Stand, March 9, 2010. Including most of my comments. at 2:49 pm on March 9, 2010. Well, DN you need to change that. Start with William Gayís story ďThe PaperhangerĒ if that eases you in. Or just about any short by Mary Gaitskill.

Iím sure youíve read Flannery OíConnor (any short), and humanistic psychology maybe Cormac McCarthy (The Road, Outer Dark, etc.)? If not, read them, theyíre certainly dark and horrific. Employees Tesco? Brian Evenson (anything), Stephen Graham Jones (All the Beautiful Sinners), Blake Butler (Scorch Atlas), thatís a great mix of humanistic founder contemporary genre-benders there. Of course Iíd personally suggest Straubís Ghost Story, Kingís The Stand or It (both very long) or The Long Walk (very short), Bret Easton Ellisí American Psycho. So many great books, no need to thomas what to be, avoid them. at 2:53 pm on March 9, 2010. A wonderful essay. Humanistic Psychology Founder? For me there are often no clear lines between genres. In many ways genres are illusions.

And what wonderful illusions they can be. Zen and the Art of Surfing. at 3:09 pm on March 9, 2010. If I read a genre fiction magazine Iím going to get that genreís fiction and it will be fairly similar, but if I open a copy of McSweeneyís or Tin House Iíll find a wide range of writing akin to what I listed. Not necessarily the caseófor one thing, you may find a Borges story in a mystery magazine (say, Ellery Queenís, back in 1948), and that issue of Tin House you pick up might have a story by trade-off genre writer Kelly Link (as did THís 2007 Fantastic Women issue). Youíre just playing the usual game of psychology pointing to the best of ďliteraryĒ fictionóMcSweeneyís and Tin Houseóand comparing them to some notional middle-of-the-road genre magazine, and thomas what like to be a bat then, shocker!, the best of A is psychology better than some imaginary average example of B. And this rather leaves aside the fact that both the magazines you name do publish genre pieces as well. at 3:30 pm on of a of The Printing Postal, March 9, 2010. No, that is really not the game Iím playing. Psychology Founder? As I said above: This is not, I donít think, a question of people ďtranscendingĒ their genre, as DN suggests. It is more that the sub-genres of literary fiction do not fit together.

There is really nothing that links a Borges story to Nation of Postal, a traditional domestic realism novel or a Oulipo literary game to a southern gothic story. My only point here is the term ďliterary fictionĒ is psychology not used in the same way as the term ďSci-FiĒ or ďRomanceĒ or whatever. What Iím saying is we are comparing apples to oranges. Of Fort Sumter? It is just a different kind of term. When Straub lists his definition for literary fiction he simply defines domestic realism. His definition doesnít include magic realism, avant-garde fiction, southern gothic or any of the other styles that are grouped under the humanistic psychology founder, term literary fiction. I only used Tin House and McSweeneyís because they are famous and people would be familiar with them.

I could name a ton of lower tier journals that would make the same point too. at 3:32 pm on March 9, 2010. And just to clarify, Iím certainly not saying that this makes literary fiction automatically better than genre fiction. Outline Approach? Iím saying the terms dontí really compare and if anything the term literary fiction might be unfair and psychology founder problematic, since great genre works (Raymond Chandler, Kurt Vonnegut, Cormac McCarthy, etc.) get snatched up and to be a bat called literary. at 3:45 pm on humanistic, March 9, 2010. It would be nice if we could move beyond the tired idea that literary fiction is by definition all but plotless. As Robin notes, itís just not accurate.

Now if youíll all excuse me, I need to go analyze the fonts on my dust jackets. at 3:46 pm on outline and evaluate the behaviourist in psychology, March 9, 2010. I would suggest that those ton of lower-tier literary journals in fact do NOT publish stuff along the lines of humanistic founder Borges and stuff along the lines of domestic realism and Essay Oulipo-based material and Kafkasque material, etc. Most of the journals Iíve ever seen have fairly strict aesthetic agendas, at least within particular issues. (Some, like Conjunctions, an issue of humanistic psychology with Straub edited, have narrow agendas but at least alter those agendas on siege of fort, an issue-by-issue basis.) Not only are Mc and psychology TH among the The Construction Nation Through of Press, Postal Service & Telegraph, best and most popular, they are among the most adventurousóthereís probably a relation between those three attributes, of course. You are correct, of course, that literary fiction is a rather large umbrella of sometimes competing and sometimes parallel traditions. But so too is something people often call ďspeculative fictionĒówhich would also include some Borges, and some naked propaganda for the space program, and psychology Robert Aickman, and Vonnegutesque satires, and Joyce Carol Oates (who publishes seemingly at whim, of course) etc. Heck, we can just narrow is down to ďfantasyĒ: what do Lovecraft and Tolkien really have in common, traditionally or aesthetically? And theyíre hardly the opposite ends of the fantastical spectrum either. Now, of course, there are genre magazines with narrow focuses, but there are also literary magazines with focuses just as narrow.

That was my objection: you picked the magazines with the broadest ďliteraryĒ focus and compared them to some notional genre magazine that would only publish a fairly narrow range. Actually existing literary magazines are almost all narrower in focus than mcSweeneyís; actually existing genre magazines are almost all at least somewhat broader in siege sumter, focus than what you give them credit for. at 3:47 pm on humanistic founder, March 9, 2010. of WHICH Straub edited. I wish The Millions allowed comments to be previewed. at 3:55 pm on thomas nagel what like to be, March 9, 2010. Richard, thanks for psychology, the suggestions. Iíve read most of that stuff, or at least the obvious (Ghost Story, OíConnor, Gaitskill). I love Stephen King and think that the Dead Zone is one of the best novels ever written, period.

I donít know that Iíll ever be able to read Cormac McCarthy, but thatís just my own thing. The other suggestions, I will check out. With horror fiction, my disappointment is that I can never find horror novels as satisfying as horror films, but maybe I am trying the wrong works. It seems that maybe one issue with horro fiction, at least in execution, is that there is a drive toward resolution or revelation that detracts. An in ability to leave ambiguous or unresolved. The beginning is alwasy so much more satisfying and horrific than the end. I would love for a horror novel to be able to not bring the plot to a conclusion, but leave it open. I donít think this is a failing of horror as a genre but just a fact of execution.

I imagine that publishers frown upon unresolved plots. at 3:57 pm on March 9, 2010. I donít think Straub is trade-off talking about just domestic literary fiction. He says ďthe several sub-genres of literary fiction,Ē and includes in psychology founder, that list ďthe experimental novel.Ē And while itís true that itís hard to of a Nation the use The Printing Postal Service, draw a line between Borges and OíConnor and psychology Fitzgerald, itís also true that itís quite easy to see in many experimental stories just how the Essay Take, author is nodding to the experimental styles of, say, Barthelme, Borges, or someone else. Even though the fiction I read is almost entirely what Straub would call ďliterary fiction,Ē I take his point ó it has its conventions. And so do its sub-genres. Humanistic Founder? Just because someone truly singular may come along and explode them every once in and evaluate approach in psychology, a while, that doesnít make the general point less true. at 3:58 pm on March 9, 2010. Lincoln, I think you are both very accurate in your comment and psychology very inaccurate.

ďThose authors (or contemporary authors like them) blurb each other, are studied together in classes, sit side by side on the literary fiction shelf of a book store, are published side by side in the same literary magazines, etc.Ē And this is how many have precisely right. These are all indicators of a ďgenreĒ , specifically ďliterary fictionĒ. But, you might say, what are the founder, tropes of literary fiction as a genre, such that Borges and Updike can be classified together? The truth is there arenít any. Or, there are, but only sumter such that can be stretched wide enough to be meaningless. Literary fiction is humanistic founder a genre because of marketing and nothing more. It is the same with mystery, horror, romance, etc. If I like x and y books sitting on the ďLiteratureĒ shelf, then I might like z. The only The Construction of a Nation the use The Printing & Telegraph thing that ties x, y, and z together is that their publishers think I will buy the psychology founder, other if I like the siege sumter, one. Look at founder it this way, how is Michael Moorcockís Behold the Man a science fiction novel? Well, you might say, it has time travel in it.

But, so does Slaughterhouse-5. As well as The Time Travelerís Wife. Are the last two science-fiction? Some people say yes, some people say no. A Stand? But if I go to a bookstore, where am I going to find them? Time travel is a trope most associated with science fiction.

But it does not define the genre. While science-fiction might have spaceships, ray guns, and aliens, etc., these things no more define the genre than a private eye and humanistic psychology founder femme fatale define film noir. Siege Of Fort Sumter? I mean, whereís the private eye in Sunset Blvd.? Whereís the humanistic, femme fatale in The Night of the Hunter? The problem comes when, to take the film noir example, you try to does, redefine these films based on quality.

That is, the only metric that would separate Sunset Blvd. and Night of the humanistic psychology founder, Hunter from how many does tesco Gun Crazy or Crimewave, is humanistic that the former are ďgreatĒ films that transcend the genre and Essay thus can no longer belong, while the latter are merely good examples of humanistic such genre. Does Tesco Have? However, ďgreatĒ isnít a genre. The problem, though, is that it has been associated with literary fiction, such that quality is humanistic psychology a defining feature of the genre. Which makes no sense, because quality (and shit) can be found in any genre. For example, what makes Cormac McCarthyís The Road not a science-fiction book? The only the behaviourist in psychology thing is humanistic psychology founder that it was marketed as literary fiction, and shelved in that section.

Thatís it. ďPost-apocalypseĒ is a trope associated with science-fiction. Outline And Evaluate In Psychology? There are good examples (Riddley Walker) and bad examples (Brinís The Postman). But theyíre all science-fiction, except when theyíre not marketed as such. These pointless genre battles often crop up, I suspect, not so much as the defensiveness of founder genre fans (be it mystery, science-fiction, horror) to be taken seriously (which I do think forms a part), but more often literary fiction fans defensiveness to admit that their taste is more defined by trade-off theory marketing than by psychology quality. That is, all genres have great examples and shit examples, but ďliterary fictionĒ is the only genre that defines itself solely as the former.

But the truth is, its just marketing. at 4:00 pm on March 9, 2010. Southern literature comes to of a of Press, & Telegraph, mind as literary fiction that is incredibly narrow in humanistic psychology founder, scope, or at least as it is collected and marketed. I remember being very frustrated in college with Southern LitĖthat is, you werenít writing Southern Lit unless you had some folks in a station wagon dwelling on the blood of the theory, earth and the history of psychology founder a familyís fortunes after the Civil War. Reading lit journals that focus on Southern Lit (at the time) often felt like reading the same cliches over and over. at 4:08 pm on March 9, 2010.

Ryan, I think we are actually in thomas nagel a bat, total agreement here: And this is precisely right. Humanistic Founder? These are all indicators of a ďgenreĒ , specifically ďliterary fictionĒ. But, you might say, what are the tropes of literary fiction as a genre, such that Borges and Updike can be classified together? The truth is a Stand there arenít any. Founder? Or, there are, but only such that can be stretched wide enough to be meaningless. My point is that literary fiction is not a term like ďhorrorĒ or ďdetective fiction.Ē It isnít a genre term. Maybe it doesnít mean anything really, but if it does it means something other than genre, namely a certain level of how many employees does artistry. Again, Iím saying that it is psychology founder problematic, but I donít think claiming that ďliterary fictionĒ = domestic realism makes much sense. at 4:12 pm on March 9, 2010. Nick: You are of tesco have course correct that there are literary magazines both big and small that have strict aesthetics.

There are also literary magazines both small and big with very broad aesthetics. But the aesthetics are not merely domestic realism, there are journals dedicated to psychology, other styles. And in addition, literary authors will target there submissions by aesthetic so that their domestic realist story goes into journal X and their Saunderish satire goes into Y and their Barthelmeish experimentation goes in Z, etc. My question do dn and anyone else, is that if all the authors and journals we are discussing are not ďliterary fictionĒ then what are they? at 4:21 pm on is it a bat, March 9, 2010. Lincoln, you say: ďAgain, Iím saying that it is founder problematic, but I donít think claiming that ďliterary fictionĒ = domestic realism makes much sense.Ē I agree completely. Saying that is like saying science-fiction = aliens, horror = monsters, mystery = detectives. However, these latter views have often become the dominant and stereotyped view, such that, if I recommended Evensonís The Open Curtain to friend saying that itís one of the best horror novels Iíve ever read, they might reply that they donít like zombies or Stephen King. Clearly, itís their loss for not being an open-minded reader, but you can hardly blame them when ďHorrorĒ as such is The Construction Nation the use The Printing Service always marketed as zombies and psychology vampires and the Saw movies.

The problem is that treating ďliterary fictionĒ as something different in nagel what to be a bat, kind to humanistic psychology founder, other genres reinforces the theory, stereotypical, popularly received opinion that ďgenre x means y and zĒ while ďliterary fiction means goodĒ. Humanistic Psychology Founder? I think that ďliterary fictionĒ is a marketing classification and nothing more. But I also think that ďhorrorĒ is a marketing classification and does tesco have nothing more. Psychology Founder? Treating them as something else, the thomas what like, former is humanistic ďqualityĒ the latter is ďgenreĒ often prevents readers from reading great works that they wouldnít normally. at 4:50 pm on March 9, 2010.

And in addition, literary authors will target there submissions by thomas nagel is it to be aesthetic so that their domestic realist story goes into journal X and their Saunderish satire goes into Y and their Barthelmeish experimentation goes in humanistic psychology, Z, etc. I canít say that Iíve noticed too many authors who write domestic realism and satire and experimental fiction and and andÖIíd love some names. Not being sarcastic here; I am always eager to siege of fort sumter, find ambitious authors, especially of short stories. My question do dn and anyone else, is humanistic founder that if all the authors and journals we are discussing are not ďliterary fictionĒ then what are they? It is literary fiction, in the same way hard science fiction by Hal Clement and avant-horror by Thomas Ligotti are both, broadly, ďthe fantastic.Ē Yet, one could not predict that a Hal Clement fan would also groove to the short stories and weird prose poems and fictional essays and tales-as-instructional-guides of does tesco Thomas Ligotti simply because both are ďfantastical.Ē In the same way one might use ďsci-fiĒ to only mean stories with spaceships in a conversation, Straub used ďliterary fictionĒ in psychology, one of the paragraphs in his essay to mean contemporary American realism. That he ably made a distinction between the ďice creamĒ of Roth and Updike on the one hand, and the not-at-all-ice-cream of William Gaddis and Nation Through & Telegraph Thomas Bernhardt on the other, tells me that Straub knows that there is humanistic psychology more to employees does have, literary fiction than domestic realism and isnít conflating the two except for momentary comic effect. at 8:12 pm on March 9, 2010. You know, itís funny, as I was reading this, and the comments that have followed, I was thinking of something entirely else, Freudís theory of heterosexual development. Freud posits homosexuality (and all the humanistic, other sexual ďdevianciesĒ) as forms of developmental Ďnon-realisationí Ė stuck in the prior stages Ė whilst heterosexual development winds up as the culmination of said development, enclosing all those prior stages within it.

Two things, first off: Iím seriously truncating the actual inner complexity of Freudís own ideas about ďdevianciesĒ (my account, as it is, is how many have more to do with ĎFreudianismí than Freud proper) and humanistic psychology Iím also not intending to make some point by point comparison between sexuality and the novel. However, as the how many does have, comparison makes clear, that privilege of psychology founder heterosexuality as that which encloses the deviancies as immature phase of of fort sumter itself, non-realisations, is founder something I wish to work with in this different context. What strikes me as resonant here is the notion that literary fiction is writing in its fullest developmental phase, with Ďgenreí relegated to that which is stuck in the prior stages. This is employees does partially why Iíve always found the praises that certain writers, like Hammett or Ligotti, get in which they Ďtranscendí the founder, genre is, at the very least, gentrifying. I do think Lincoln makes a quite excellent point when he argues that the sub-genres of outline the behaviourist approach in psychology literary fiction do not fit together but I think Iíd argue that this is humanistic quite the thomas nagel what is it like a bat, same state of affairs with genre itself. Ryan has made the point already really fantastically above, so Iím going to cite him: ďLook at it this way, how is Michael Moorcockís Behold the humanistic founder, Man a science fiction novel? Well, you might say, it has time travel in how many tesco have, it. But, so does Slaughterhouse-5.

As well as The Time Travelerís Wife. Are the last two science-fiction? Some people say yes, some people say no. Founder? But if I go to a bookstore, where am I going to find them? Time travel is a trope most associated with science fiction. How Many Employees Tesco? But it does not define the genre. Humanistic Founder? While science-fiction might have spaceships, ray guns, and aliens, etc., these things no more define the genre than a private eye and femme fatale define film noir.

I mean, whereís the private eye in Sunset Blvd.? Whereís the femme fatale in the behaviourist, The Night of the Hunter?Ē Exactly. The supposedly syntactical Ďelementsí that compose a genreís discreteness break down upon psychology any close inspection. A Stand? However, what I suspect is that what the literary withholds from genre is precisely Ďartistryí and humanistic psychology founder I donít think the distinction between pulp and genre quite resolves this, only repackages the bogus distinction.

The art claim for literary fiction, for one thing, imports some concept of outline approach in psychology a maturity in writing. But genre reacts to the word quite distinctly, though no less maturely, from what we call literary fiction. Genre uses language with immense dexterity, I believe, but not so much in a sort of Ďwell wrought urní mode. Rather, its brilliance is in its mobilisation of language movement and in the creation through arrangements of scenarios, a syntax of them, powerful styles. If, despite the acres of difference between them, such that thereís much passionate antipathy between adherents of psychology founder each writer, there does seem a greater kinship between Hammett and Chandler than OíConnor and Borges, then Iíd argue that this is due not to literary fictionís greater diversity but is theory due (along with the humanistic psychology founder, misimpressions of marketing, another great point Ryan makes) to trade-off, the commitment we still have, despite the humanistic founder, apparent obliteration of trade-off theory high and humanistic psychology low cultures under postmoderism, to siege sumter, relegating the un-urnlike to founder, less than literary rather than what is truer to say of it: that it is anti-literary , another vector altogether. Trade-off? Which is why many of those cross-over books that are deemed literary actually often avoid whatís most profound about psychology founder, them: namely, how they fuck with the literary.

Indeed, literary fiction may be able to offer a string of names to show its vast differences but despite everyone from Borges to Kafka to OíConnor to and evaluate the behaviourist, Sorrentino to Barthelme to Bolano to Bernhard do belong together, as their list-ability demonstrates, in terms of the argument that their linguistic acts are the apotheosis of writing. Of course, this is not to say that the founder, language text itself is somehow normative but I do believe our response to Essay a Stand, the language text as the deepest layer of the humanistic founder, literary is definitely normative, not least in terms of the inspirations which inform those texts attentions to trade-off, style and structure (Alain Robbe-Grillet was deeply influenced by Hammett, for instance, and he veritably invented the notion of the Ďnew novelí). Also, too, genre writing can be quite languagey itself. Take, for instance, this passage from Kingís latest, Under the Dome , where a light aircraft runs into the Ďdomeí which inexplicably appears out of nowhere: ďThe Seneca exploded over Route 119 and rained fire down on humanistic psychology founder, the countryside. It also rained body parts. A smoking forearm Ė Claudetteís Ė landed with a thump beside the neatly divided woodchuck. It was October twenty-first.Ē Whatís quite wonderful about this in terms of the way itís written is the quite conscious corruption of its own metaphor: where fire raining has a distinct dramatic unity, this is crudened immediately by trade-off theory the rain being turned into a rain of body parts, which in its lumpy thingness is likened to the grotesquery of the psychology founder, Ďneatly dividedí woodchuck, which could double here as a metaphor for the writing of what to be genre itself, cleanly sliced critter. Capped with the disquietingly aerating, the inexpressive yet watchful eye of the date.

This is what Ďgenreí does quite constantly on the level of language, corrupts the liquidity of humanistic psychology writing, lumps, stirs, jumps, cuts, designs cleanly sliced critter, to achieve all kinds of of fort uncanny effects. Given all this, I really think that there is a deep sense in which we need to humanistic psychology founder, do away with the siege of fort sumter, developmental supremacy we hand automatically to literary fiction, even when we say genre works Ďcaní be Ďasí good as that fiction. Humanistic Founder? It really binds in not just genre but also the sources and pursuits of writing itself. at 8:18 pm on March 9, 2010. As a horror writer myself, I have also often heard the phrase, ďYouíre such a good writer ó why do you waste your time with horror?Ē As if the genre (which is defined, as Straub points out, by emotional viewpoint, not by specific content) is inherently invalid.

I think ďliterary fictionĒ is The Construction Nation The Printing Press, Postal Service a genre, at least as bookstores treat it. Of course, one could easily say that many well-respected ďliteraryĒ works are horror. Take Toni Morrisonís Beloved, for example. If the overwhelming emotion of founder that novel isnít horror, then I must not understand what horror is. (Beloved even has a strong supernatural element to it, moving it even further into that genre category, if I dare say so.) I believe that writers with integrity tell the stories that interest and move them. Its the marketing side of things that insists on labels and pigeonholing, which then gives some people the opportunity to dismiss whole ďcategoriesĒ of work on the basis of outline the behaviourist in psychology arbitrarily defined ďgenres.Ē at 10:03 pm on March 9, 2010. Book marketing is humanistic founder like a fashion show, everything on parade is nagel what like to be a bat stuffed into a size two, even if it requires starvation. We all know real people, real writers, are rounder than that, no matter which peg you cram them into, there will always be that overflow poking out psychology, of the top.

You canít use old rusty pipes to trade-off, lasso a piece of art; you have to humanistic founder, use something flexible. There is nothing flexible about labels. Quite frankly the how many employees have, word genre and straight-jacket have a lot in common, in my humble opinion. Humanistic Psychology? Iíd say Straub is wrong that Chandler was the last person to elevate genre crime fiction to The Construction Nation the use Postal Service, an art. James Ellroy has done that several times in his still-ongoing career, starting with LA Confidential, and continuing through stylist experiments like White Jazz to his latest, Bloodís a Rover.

But crime fiction does have some restraints that most writers havenít been able to overcome ó if they even want to try. at 11:34 pm on humanistic psychology, March 9, 2010.
